Update on potential Methadone Clinic opening
It has come to my attention that there may be a methadone clinic opening up on Lake Shore Blvd W at Sixth Street. While the types of businesses that open up in our community are not chosen by City Council, I have instructed Municipal Licensing and Standards, City Planning, Toronto Building, Toronto Public Health to investigate the approvals necessary for this type of business.
I can confirm that there have been no applications made to any City department requesting this type of use, nor any permits to renovate the building for this purpose.
I am disappointed by some of the language that has been used in reference to this facility. Everyone has the right to be treated with respect and should not face discrimination in seeking treatment for addiction. It is unfortunate that there is a need for these types of facilities in our city, and I believe there should be outreach with information about the types of services and treatment provided. I also believe the local community should be consulted and have a strong voice in how and where these facilities operate in their neighbourhood.
I do have some concerns about a clinic of this nature potentially opening in such close proximity to an elementary school, if the clinic is not managed responsibly. I hope that any new business owners will follow all legal and city bylaws and act as good corporate citizens and members of our community.
Methadone clinics and pharmacies are governed by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. You can contact the Ministry of Health at (416) 327-4300 or our local Member of Provincial Parliament, Peter Milczyn, at 416-259-2249 or email@example.com.
The City is currently investigating the feasibility of licencing methadone clinics http://app.toronto.ca/tmmis/viewAgendaItemHistory.do?item=2015.LS5.6 but a report is not yet available until mid 2016.
I will work with the community and all levels of government until this matter is resolved, and I will continue to provide more information as I receive it.
