Toronto Pearson Runway Construction Completion

Please see the communication sent to me on May 15, 2017, regarding the Airplane Noise and GTAA runway construction:

Dear Councillor Grimes,

On March 28, the GTAA began conducting a rehabilitation construction project on Runway 05/23, Toronto Pearson’s busiest runway. I’m writing to provide you with updates about on the project:

On the evening of Tuesday, May 16, rehabilitation work on our main East-West surface, Runway 05/23, will be completed, and regular runway operations will resume. Further construction on Runway 05/23 at Toronto Pearson will not be required. Phase 3 of the construction, scheduled for Fall 2017, was completed during Phases 1 and 2. Runway rehabilitation will be completed safely and on time, returning the runway to service ahead of peak summer travel.

We expect flight paths around Toronto Pearson will now return to more regular usage patterns, determined by weather and other operational factors. Residents to the north and south of the airport should notice reduced aircraft traffic levels than what has been occurring during this period of runway work; residents to the east and west may become aware of aircraft traffic levels they were familiar with prior to March 28.  You can click here to learn more about how our Noise Management Office tracks and addresses aircraft noise related concerns.

We’ll be communicating our return to regular operations through: an updated Noise Advisory, our social media channels, messaging on our WebTrak system, outreach to CENAC members and Checking In, our community e-newsletter.

We're working to develop an enhanced construction communications protocol that will draw from industry best practices.  The GTAA will continue to refine its approach to communicating with passengers, local communities and elected officials.

Thanks again for your patience as we complete this piece of critical infrastructure work in rehabilitating Runway 05/23.   Please keep in touch, we’d be happy to answer any questions you may have.
