Moving Forward with Park Lawn GO
To say I'm thrilled by today's Metrolinx announcement would be an understatement. Starting in 2015 with a petition initiated by myself and Councillor Di Ciano regarding a new GO station at Park Lawn, the importance of transit for our community has only grown each and every day. Support from all three levels of government for the area also helped ensure this initiative moved forward for our community. The Member of Provincial Parliament for the area asked the City to make Park Lawn GO a priority, and I have worked consistently to do so.
I am extremely grateful to the Etobicoke-Lakeshore residents who signed the petition and actively called on all levels of government to support the case for a new GO station, as well as my request for an integrated transit hub on the First Capital (former Christie's) site. In November 2017, I moved another motion asking that the City work with Metrolinx to ensure that a Park Lawn GO station would made a priority, given the residential density in the Humber Bay Shores community, and the immense possibility for the future of the First Capital site.
This announcement is another important step in ensuring our community has the necessary transit it needs to serve both current and future residents. An integrated transit hub with both TTC and GO operations would serve to provide city and Greater Toronto Area-wide connections for Etobicoke-Lakeshore residents. Working with the Waterfront Transit Reset and the Park Lawn Lake Shore Master Plan, a Park Lawn GO station would be transformative for the community, especially given the significant employment potential on the First Capital site.
I am optimistic about the future of transit in this area, and look forward to the next steps regarding this critical transit initiative. Metrolinx has confirmed it supports moving this case forward to preliminary design, and you can read the updated business case here.
I also want to thank Mayor John Tory, Member of Parliament James Maloney, MPP Peter Milczyn and the Humber Bay Shores Condominium for their support for transit in our community.
