Ward 6 Information
Ward 6 is situated in south-west Toronto and is bound by Etobicoke Creek to the west, the Gardner Expressway to the north and Lake Ontario to the south. It is 18 square kilometres in size.
It is divided into five neighbourhoods; Alderwood, Long Branch, New Toronto, Mimico and Humber Bay Shores. Prior to the city of Toronto’s amalgamation in 1998, Ward 6 was part of the larger city of Etobicoke.
While Ward 6 is primarily known for its beautiful lake front properties and parks, it was also home to many historical figures.
Colonel Samuel Smith, member of the Queen’s Rangers during the American Revolutionary War, once owned 4 km2 of land ranging from Lake Ontario, to Humber River, and to what is now Trinity Bellwood Park. Colonel Samuel Smith Park in New Toronto is named to commemorate this.
Other figures who’ve lived in the area include: Amos H. Waites (Mimico’s longest running mayor from 1936-1948), Jerome Drayton (Canada’s top male marathon runner of all-time, 1999 and Canada’s top male distance runner of all-time, 2005), Brendan Shanahan (Olympic Hockey Gold Metal Winner, 2002), Theodore Loblaw (founder of Loblaws food chain), Les Stroud (Canadian musician, filmmaker and star of Discovery Channel’s “Survivorman”) and Sir Ernest MacMillian (orchestral conductor and composer, recipient of the Order of Canada).
