Re: Mimico and Long Branch GO Station Upgrades
Dear Mr. Verster,
I am writing to you regarding much-needed improvements to Long Branch GO and Mimico GO stations. $44 million in upgrades to Mimico GO – including new parking spaces, pedestrian tunnels and an expanded Royal York bridge, among other improvements – were announced by the area Minister of Provincial Parliament (MPP) in 2012. Upgrades to Long Branch GO were subsequently announced in 2013. To my knowledge, large-scale work has not commenced at either station.
The Etobicoke-Lakeshore community has awaited these upgrades for many years, and residents have informed me that the current lack of accessibility, particularly at Mimico GO station, continues to impact and/or prohibit their ability to utilize GO transit services to move throughout the city. In addition to accessibility issues, I have also heard concerns from residents regarding limited parking, unannounced schedule changes and train cancellations.
I have asked Metrolinx staff for briefings and plans for the aforementioned station upgrades on several occasions, and have not received a response.
As Toronto continues to grow, it's important that there is infrastructure in place to serve its residents. Though Metrolinx is an agency of the provincial government and not the City, many South Etobicoke residents rely on GO Transit daily to travel throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
In response to concerns raised by Etobicoke-Lakeshore residents, I kindly request that Metrolinx advise when we can expect the necessary upgrades and accessibility improvements to both Mimico and Long Branch GO stations. In addition, any information regarding scheduling changes and train cancellation issues would be helpful.
I have copied in the Member of Provincial Parliament for Etobicoke-Lakeshore Peter Milczyn on this matter.
As the provincial and municipal representative for our community, it is imperative that we continue to work together to advocate for these critical infrastructure improvements to serve South Etobicoke residents. Your consideration regarding these matters is greatly appreciated.
