This is devastating news for our community, and I was extremely disappointed to hear the rumours confirmed that the plant will be closing, resulting in the loss of 380 jobs. Campbell's has been a part of our community for generations, and many Lakeshore residents feel a connection to the iconic facility on Birmingham Street.
This plant opened 87 years ago in 1931, and is the last remaining part of the large-scale manufacturing industry in New Toronto, which once included Goodyear, CIL, Continental Can, and Anaconda Brass operations, among others. In the 1920s, this community was known for having the highest value of manufacturing per square mile in all of North America.
Campbell's has employed generations of residents in Etobicoke-Lakeshore. I personally have many close, personal friends who work at this facility. I am truly saddened to hear this news, and want to extend my sympathies to all the employees and families that will be affected by this closure. This is a truly sad day for the Lakeshore community.
