The Mayor and Members of Toronto City Council are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Donald D. Fisher on January 27, 2009.
Don Fisher was a well known and admired figure in the South Etobicoke area. For twenty two years he brightened the morning of Go Train passengers at the Mimico Station where he worked as a ticket collector.
Affectionately known as "Big Don” to the community, he had a larger-than-life personality, Big Don greeted every passenger with a wide smile and a "hi, there" as he sat behind the ticket window at the Mimico GO Station.
He retired in May 2004 but since his retirement Don returned to his post every Christmas, handing out candies and greeting the passengers who he knew as friends for many years
It is the everyday heroes like Don Fisher that make Toronto a great city to live in. Everyday he demonstrated his love for his fellow man and treated everyone with politeness and respect. These values Don had said were taught to him by his parents, and what he in turn passed on to his community.
Toronto residents remember Don Fisher as a great friend, and a sociable person who was the salt of the Earth.
The City Clerk is requested to convey, on behalf of the Members of Toronto City Council, our sincere sympathy to Donald Fisher’s daughter Renee and his family.
