Biography

Mark Grimes was elected City Councillor for Ward 6 on November 10, 2003 and re-elected on November 13, 2006. Mark is proud to say that he is a man rooted in the Etobicoke-Lakeshore community. His commitment to family and community is a product of a life nurtured in the heart of the Lakeshore. Mark knows the ground he walks in South Etobicoke.
Mark and his three brothers were raised here and now he and his wife Anne, a registered nurse, are raising five children of their own. Mark understands intimately the demands of family and the need for first-rate community services, organizations and recreational facilities for families.
Before entering politics, Mark was the President/Owner of a business in south Etobicoke where he and his brothers operate a thriving logistics business. From this experience he became keenly aware of the pressing economic issues for local businesses. Prior to starting his own business, Mark worked as a Professional Trader and Market Maker for a major financial firm for 13 years at the Toronto Stock Exchange.
Mark readily gives back to the community he loves. Throughout his life in the Lakeshore, he has been both an active participant and dedicated leader on a variety of projects ranging from raising awareness of the need for shelters for women to actively participating and supporting minor hockey in the community. In 2003, Mark, working with the Floor Traders Association, raised over $20,000 for The Hospital for Sick Children and Rose Cherry's Home.
Mark recognizes that safety and security starts in our neighbourhoods and that getting involved is important. In recognition of his commitment to the community and his efforts in assisting local police in reducing crime, Mark was awarded a Civilian Citation from the Toronto Police.
In continuing with his commitment to community safety, Mark worked hard to have a Temporary Storefront Police Station installed on Lake Shore Boulevard West at Ninth Street. This addition to the community will provide a much needed police presence on the Lakeshore and a place where local concerned residents can go to voice their safety issues. Mark has also worked together with the Toronto Police to finalize plans for the Police College located on 70 Birmingham Street where the Storefront Police Station will be relocated once completed. The ground breaking ceremony for the Police College took place on October 6, 2006. Mark’s dedication to safety lead him to initiate Community Safety Seminars in the four areas of Ward 6, Alderwood, Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch, which provided the Police and Mark with important information about what concerns residents have.
Mark has also been working to protect the interests of local residents by working with local developers and holding public consultation meetings to get community input on new projects. This process ensures that residents have a voice when development decisions are made. Mark is also a part of an initiative, led by six concerned City Councillors, to reform the OMB (Ontario Municipal Board). They are working together to help improve the planning and appeals process at the provincial level.
Other successful projects that Mark is working on include: Mimico Linear Park, the Revitalization of Mimico Memorial Park, the Lakeshore Lions Arena, the Newport Beach Pond, Avenue Study, Business Revitalization of the Lakeshore, defeating 700 Evans at City Council, funding/construction of a new skateboard park facility for local youth, Lakeshore Mardi Gras and the Argos Stop the Violence Campaign.
As a life-long resident, activist and businessperson in south Etobicoke, Mark has first-hand knowledge of the issues the community is facing. He understands the Lakeshore and will continue working as your City Councillor to protect the community’s best interests as they are his own.
